In this Article, we answer five gardening Faqs – frequently asked questions. This is Part 4 of our Q and A Series on Gardening Ideas and Answers, will try to reveal 5 more interesting answers to gardening questions like:
Lets begin!
Do Plants Feel Pain?
There are many studies and research conducted on this topic. Plants lack a nervous system—that is, a brain and other neurological structures like nerves and pain receptors—so they should not feel pain, unlike humans and animals who have specialized pain receptors. However, some research suggests that plants can sense when they are being eaten. Studies have shown that plants release defense chemicals in response to caterpillars munching on them. Additionally, plants exhibit behaviors such as fighting for territory, seeking out food, evading predators, and trapping prey, similar to animals.
Can We Grow Plants from Leaves?
Yes! Some plants, but not all, can be propagated from just a leaf or a section of a leaf. Leaf cuttings of most plants will not generate a new plant; they usually produce only a few roots or decay. Propagation methods include:
- Leaf petiole propagation
- Dividing a leaf into multiple pieces (e.g., fleshy succulents like Sansevieria or snake plant)
- Other methods such as cane or stub cuttings, root cuttings, and leaf bud cuttings
I plan to prepare a detailed episode on this topic in the future.
Can Artificial Light Be Used for Photosynthesis and Do Plants Flower Under It?
Yes, artificial light can be used for photosynthesis. Good quality LED grow lights are highly efficient because they provide the exact spectrum of light that plants need. However, remember that while sunlight is free, high-quality LED lights can be quite expensive.
Can I Use Coffee as a Pesticide on Plants?
Yes, coffee can be used as a pesticide. Coffee contains caffeine, which is neurotoxic to many pests like aphids. You can make a caffeine spray by combining coffee with other insecticides. Research has shown that caffeine can enhance the effectiveness of insecticides.
To make a caffeine spray:
- Use any organic pesticide recipe, such as neem oil or clove oil.
- Add one or two tablespoons of used coffee grounds or 1-2 teaspoons of fresh coffee.
- Mix well, let it marinate for 24 hours, strain, and use it with your regular pesticide.

Now, Lastly, a Funny Question!
How do I prevent my neighbors from stealing my plants and fruits from my garden?
While some might consider installing a burglar alarm, fencing, or locking the garden, a simple remedy is to interact with your neighbors and make friends with them. Engage in discussions about exchanging plants, seeds, or cuttings. Taking the first step to present them with some of your plants or cuttings can often solve the problem.
