Today Once again we will try to answer whether blood or urine as fertilizer usage in garden. This is another set of Five interesting gardening questions and thoughts. Questions like: My Grandma says: Never go near plants in night time? Can we use animal or menstrual blood on plants? Can we use Human or animal Urine for Plants? And two other interesting questions.
Now Lets Begin with the first grandma question !
My Grandma Says, “Do Not Go Near Plants During the Night Time” — Why?
During the daytime, in the presence of sunlight, plants engage in photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, water from the roots, and sunlight to produce sugars. In this process, they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which is beneficial. However, at night, plants take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. This results in a lower concentration of oxygen and a higher concentration of carbon dioxide near plants. Therefore, it’s generally advised not to linger near large trees or dense vegetation at night. The impact is minimal for small plants or home gardens. Additionally, some plants perform a different type of photosynthesis called CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), which allows them to prepare food at night. I have discussed this in my video on 24-hour oxygen-producing plants for health.
What’s the World’s Largest Flower?
The flower with the world’s largest bloom is the Rafflesia arnoldii, found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow up to 3 feet across and weigh up to 50 pounds! This plant is parasitic, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem.
My Tomato Plant is Producing Lots of Flowers but Not Fruiting — Why?
The most common reason for this issue is insufficient pollination. Check if the pesticides you’re using might be deterring honeybees and other beneficial pollinators from entering your garden. Other potential causes include insufficient fertilization; consider adding a fertilizer high in potash and calcium.
Can I Add Blood to Plants? Can Menstrual Blood Fertilize Your Houseplants?
The answer is yes, but with caution. Blood contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), which are essential nutrients for plants. However, using raw blood or other raw animal products can be harmful. Uncomposted manure or raw organic material can lead to the growth of harmful microorganisms and nitrogen deficiency in plants. To safely use blood as a fertilizer, opt for products like blood meal, which are made from dried and decomposed animal blood. These are available at garden stores and are processed to be safe for plant use.
Can Animal or Human Urine as Fertilizer?
Although it may seem uncomfortable, human or animal urine (e.g., cow urine) contains significant amounts of NPK, which are essential nutrients for plants. However, it must be diluted with water at a ratio of at least 1:20 before application. This topic warrants more detailed discussion, which we will explore in a future episode.
