In today’s post, we will show you two methods on how to make banana peel fertilizer properly to induce enormous flowering in plants. One is banana peel water for plants, that’s called banana tea fertilizer and the other is banana peel powder fertilizer. Let’s jump right into making these two organic or natural fertilizers for our home garden.
Think twice before dumping banana peels into a bin! A limited and unattractive piece of your daily morning fruit is one of the most beneficial composting wastes for your plants. Banana peels are the most prominent organic source of potassium and enhance the overall health of your plants. This element makes a pivotal contribution to the plant’s capability to strengthen the stems and the plant’s defense against various diseases. Additionally, this nutrient is crucial for the flowering process and the properties of fruits. Simultaneously, it is only one component of the banana peels, which are also abundant in phosphorus and calcium.
Hence, now it is time to craft organic plant waste using two straightforward methods: banana peel fertilizer and banana tea.
Banana Peel Fertilizer
Gather Banana Peels
To ensure eco-friendly waste distribution and management, the first action to be taken is the collection of banana peels. When collecting, relax and remember that the riper bananas are used, the more beneficial the peels might be. Hence, do not be in a rush to collect the banana peels that have been resting for a short time and do not throw them away until a decent amount of peels has been accumulated to craft the product.
Dry Peels
While reaching the potential of banana peels in a fertilizer product, it is crucial to dry the peels. Here, you have two options: sun drying and microwaving.
Sun Drying
Simply put, the peels should be tightly laid out on a tray, which would allow sunbeams to penetrate the peels from all sides. The peels have to lay in the sun for at least two days. The time might vary depending on the climate and the humidity in your area. In the end, dried peels should have a crispy texture, meaning that throwing them away, you should hear a light crack and feel them breaking in your fingers.
Microwave Drying
If there is not enough sunlight available, you can use a microwave. You should cut the peels into smaller sections to ensure they all dry properly. Put them on a microwave-safe plate, and microwave them in intervals until they become crispy. You will need to be careful not to burn the peels.
Crush to Powder
Once the peels are dried enough and are crispy, you will need to crush them. To do so, you can use a mortar and pestle or a blender. Now, you have the powder, which is your banana peel fertilizer.
Application
To feed your plants, you should sprinkle one tablespoon of banana peel powder at the base of your plants every 15 days. You will have to water the plants immediately. To maximize effectiveness, you may want to scratch the surface of the soil gently to allow the nutrients to seep deeper into the soil, where the roots of the plants can absorb them. You can expect your plants to become very healthy and productive after 3 months of regular applications.
DIY Banana Peel Tea
Prepare the Peels
To make the banana peel tea, you should first cut the peels into very small parts. The size of the parts is not critical, but smaller sections may help the nutrients to be utilized more effectively. Next, put the pieces in a bowl or any other container and cover them with cold water. Wait for at least 3 days. During this time, the water will have absorbed the nutrients, such as potassium, from the peels, and will be ready to serve as banana peel tea.
Use the Tea
After the soaking period, the banana peels go into the trash. The banana peel soaking water is now a rich fertilizer. Your hydroponic banana peel tea is now ready to use. To use this tea for watering your plants, it must first be diluted with water at a ratio of 1:5. This dilution ratio provides the necessary concentration for feeding the plants while ensuring the protection of crops when there is a limited supply of organic matter in the hydroponic system. It also prevents the concentration from increasing unnecessarily and provides additional nutrition for plants.
Important Considerations
Although banana peels are very helpful for plants, they must be used properly as they can cause the following problems:
- Burying Raw Peels in the Soil: It is not recommended to bury raw peels or throw whole peels around plants because this will attract many insects and maggots, causing increased pest attraction. Raw peels also decompose and absorb the nitrate from the soil that surrounding plants need to grow, which will harm your plants and take a long time to decompose.
Hence, the peels should first be dried and powdered or brewed into a hydroponic banana peel tea using the methods described above to avoid decomposition risks. This will act as a good natural banana fragment.
Benefits of Using Banana Peels for Plants
Nutrient-Rich Source
Banana peels are a rich source of various nutrients that are beneficial to the growth of plants. Using banana peels ensures that plants receive an organic, environmentally friendly source of nutrition.
Cost-Effective
For gardeners, using banana peels as fertilizer is a cost-effective approach. Being a regular gardener can be expensive, especially when using commercially available fertilizers. By collecting banana peels and making banana peel fertilizer and tea, you can save money without cutting down on the care for your plants. Additionally, this approach ensures the quality of the fertilizer since there are no chemicals in the banana peels, making it an environmentally friendly option.
Improved Plant Health
The banana peels, mainly when ripened, are very rich in important nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which are significant to the life and health of any plant. These nutrients are linked with root building, blossom, and fruit formation. When banana peel fertilizer and tea are used on plants, you can expect improved and long-lasting health for your flowers. The most visible sign of using banana peel tea is stronger roots in flowering plants.
Easy to Use
Both banana peel fertilizer and tea are easy to make and use. They do not require any specialized equipment. All that is required is a bucket with a plastic lid stored away from the house due to the strong odor that emanates. They are made using simple and accessible methods as described in the steps above.
