In this Article you will learn about about What are Rooting Hormone For Plants & Organic Rooting Stimulants – available in form of powders, liquids or gels forms and are an important stuff in cloning process in gardening – cloning is growing a plant from its cuttings taken from mother plant.
What is a Rooting Hormone?
Rooting hormones are chemicals or substances that help promote fast and healthy onset of new roots. They can be either synthetic chemicals or naturally occurring organic rooting hormones.
Forms of Rooting Hormones
These are available in powders, liquids, or gels and are an important component in the cloning process in gardening. Cloning involves growing a plant from its cuttings taken from the mother plant.
Natural Root Production
Most plant cuttings will naturally produce their own rooting hormones after a short period of time. In fact, many plants can easily be cloned by simply placing the cutting in some clean water without any external aid like a rooting chemical.
Challenges with Natural Root Production
However, some plants are difficult to clone and do not grow well with this ordinary method. Other plants may take a long time to develop roots without the use of a rooting hormone, slowing down the production of the entire garden. Hence, the use of a rooting hormone will provide more consistent results than cuttings just placed in water or soil for rooting.
Role of Auxins
Auxins are one of the main plant hormones that aid in the creation of initial root growth. More specifically, indole acetic acid (IAA) is the natural auxin found in plants responsible for natural root stimulation.
IAA is involved in various aspects of plant growth and development, including:
- Formation of embryo development
- Induction of cell division
- Stem elongation
- Vascular tissue differentiation
- Fruit/flower development
- Induction of rooting
Synthetic Rooting Hormones
Most rooting products do not contain IAA but rather a synthetic form of indole-butyric acid (IBA) and/or napthaleneacetic acid (NAA). These rooting hormone products come in different forms, each with its advantages and disadvantages.
Example of Rooting Product
One common rooting product, called Rooter, contains the IBA chemical. It is available at a low cost and can be purchased online. Always ensure the product is sealed properly and check the barcode before use.
Organic / Natural Rooting Hormones
Organic rooting powders are also effective:
- Cinnamon Bark Powder: Easily available in your kitchen or grocery store, mainly used for its antiseptic and antifungal properties for propagating cuttings.
- Honey: Another excellent product used for fast rooting, with similar action to cinnamon powder.
How to Use Rooting Hormones in Powder Form
To use these hormones in powdered form for propagating cuttings:
- Dip the cutting base in the rooting powder.
- Make a hole in the soil.
- Insert the cuttings into the hole.
By following these steps, you can effectively use rooting hormones to promote healthy root development in your plant cuttings.
