In Today’s post, let’s look into some important care tips on growing Sanchezia plant and also how to easily propagate Sanchezia plant it from cuttings.
Sanchezia: An Overview
Sanchezia is an evergreen plant and perennial in most zones. It’s a lovely ornamental indoor or shade-loving plant, and it flowers once a year. The botanical name is Sanchezia speciosa or Sanchezia nobilis plant. There are various other names, such as Golden vein Plant, Zebra Plant and so on.
Plant Growth and size
The size of this plant can go up to a height of 10 feet if it’s grown in the ground. But, if you grow in the containers, then it’s necessary that you need to repot this plant once in a year with a bigger container or you need to trim this plant regularly to control its size. Since it’s a large plant, if not trimmed regularly, it’s size cannot control and moreover, it will have a more number of branches, which makes it difficult to grow this as a houseplant. Once regular trimmings are done, the lush green leaves of this plant add beauty to the indoors.
Sanchezia Flowering
The flowers grow only once in a year during the Spring to summer season. These are the spikes of bright yellow to orange + coloured tubular flowers. These flowers are usually seen from the March to the June months. These flowers look very attractive and increase the beauty of the plant.
Sunlight Requirement
Sanchezia is grown as an indoor plant mainly. It needs only filtered sunlight. It grows well if it’s placed in any entrance to the home or any windows, where it gets only sunlight from the top or sunlight without direcet rays. If the sunlight falls directly, its leaves may get burnt. But, this plant can be even kept in early morning sun lights. That means the morning sun light is not so strong and this strong sunlight is in the early morning which is good for the plant. You can place the saucer out of the balcony and keep them in the early morning sunlight, which is also a good idea. But rest of the day, it should be in the place where it gets only filtered sunlight or no sunlight directly. So, west or east side of th ehome is the best place. These kinds of plants can also be grown in an east facing balcony. Thus early morning and in the evenings, it’s good, but, between, it may not be good. So, as far as possible, check with the plants and take care.
Humidity
This plant is a lover of humidity. It cannot tolerate very cold conditions. When the humidity is very low, then place the pot in the middle of a humidity tray. For that, take a big tray and put some pebbles in it and just pour some water to the level just below the pebbles only. It’s just like keeping the pot in a centre in the tray as shown in the below image. When the humidity levels are going very down, keep the tray in the correct place. If you feel that the humidity levels are very low, then you need to mist this plant with water also. We can apply this only during winters or when they keept very close to air conditioner. In other seasons, you no need to keep them in this tray.
Watering Sanchezia
Sanchezia loves moisture and needs to be watered especially if the top layer of soil dries up quickly. It depends on the condition of the soil, where they have placed the plant. If the placement is indoors, watering on alternate days in summer should be sufficient. Mostly, the plant starts to droop at the right time especially calling for water. The fingers can easily be dipped in the soil to check moisture before watering. It is important not to overwater it because it leads to root rot.
Potting Soil and pH
They should be potted in a well-drained potting mix that has some compost in it. They prefer growing in neutral pH or a slightly acidic pH range which is 6 to 7, good for most plants. For any plant, draining the soil or medium is important to avoid waterlodging which leads to root or other plant diseases.
Fertilizers
The plants require feeding occasionally and any type of fertilizer used is appropriate for feeding the plant. A handful of decomposed cow dung or vermicompost is sufficient for feeding. Rake or loosen the soil before feeding to help the fertilizer mix into the soil. They can also be fed with balanced, water-soluble fertilizers to provide all the required nutrients for the plants.
Pest Control
Sanchezia are attacked by scale insects as well as mites occasionally especially while flowering. It is advised to apply neem oil spray to get rid of this problem, it should be sprayed just before spring. To prevent pests, ensure that the plant is thoroughly monitored and any infestation is treated immediately to maintain the healthy condition of the plant.
Sanchezia Propagation
Sanchezia can be propagated easily from its stem cuttings. The top 8 inches of terminal end cuttings work great. You can use some rooting hormone if you want to and stick the cuttings into some well-draining soil. However, maintaining humidity is a key fact to have success in propagating from cuttings. You can cover these cuttings using some polythene cover to maintain humidity and water the soil and keeping the water moist. This will create somewhat of a mini greenhouse that will have your cuttings developing roots quicker.
Sanchezia is a plant that you can prune its dead or yellowing leaves to keep it healthy as it grows. The plant is also a plant that will not do very well in the cold so you should keep it in a warm environment that does not get colder than 50°F. You can add a layer of mulch around the plant’s base to retain moisture and regulate the temperature of the soil.
In conclusion, Sanchezia is such a beautiful and a viable plant that will add some spark to your beautiful garden. Which all the sunlight, humidity, watering, soil, and fertilization tips, also with the tips on how to keep away pests and having a successful propagation for the beautiful plant; be sure you can enjoy your lovely Sanchezia plant at your home garden for quite some time.
