Today we will discuss on Coco Pots or the coconut coir pots. The Pros and cons of using coco pots and how they help in faster plant growth by using automatic air pruning pots mechanism.
For those who want to grow their plants faster organically, shifting from plastic pots or cement pots to coco pots is the best option. You will learn about this shortly.
What Are Coco Pots?
Coco Pots, also known as coir pots or coconut coir pots, are biodegradable planters made from coconut fibers. They are popular in horticulture and home gardening due to their numerous advantages. These pots come in various sizes and shapes, including seedling cups, hanging pots, and other decorative planters.
How Are Coco Pots Manufactured?
Coco pots are made from coconut fibers, which are inexpensive and commonly used to make coco peat, a popular component in potting mixes. The manufacturing process involves using coconut coir fibers and natural rubber latex, which are both 100% natural and biodegradable. These pots can be either handmade or machine-made, but the basic materials remain consistent.
Disadvantages of Coco Pots
Cost
Coco pots are generally more expensive than cement or plastic pots.
Durability
The pots are not as durable as plastic or cement pots and may wear out more quickly.
Benefits of Using Coco Coir Planters
Biodegradable
Coco coir pots are biodegradable. When using seedling pots or small planters, you can plant the entire container into the soil. The pot will degrade naturally, allowing the plant’s roots to establish in the soil and minimizing transplant shock.
Nourishment
Coco coir is rich in essential nutrients such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, copper, and iron. These nutrients are beneficial for plant growth and are particularly useful for seed starting.
Lightweight
The lightweight nature of these pots makes them ideal for terrace gardening and hanging planters. They are easier to handle and move around compared to heavier pots.
Air Pruning of Roots
One of the most significant advantages of coco-pots is air pruning. Unlike non-porous pots (like plastic or cement), coco pots allow for air exchange. This prevents roots from becoming root-bound as they grow. When roots reach the porous surface of the pot, they dry out and are naturally pruned, promoting healthier root development and reducing the need for re-potting.
Plants grown in coconut coir pots undergo air pruning which promotes healthy root distribution and avoids root coiling. So what exactly happens with this air pruning of roots. These pots are porous on all sides, the growing roots quickly penetrate or touch the pot walls. On coming in contact with the air, the root tip is burnt by air and that root point stop growing and hence two new root branches start to appear leading to secondary roots that start to multiply within the pot in a similar process without coiling.
